29: The Alchemy Of Playful Curiosity In Leadership
Suzy shares her transition from employee to business owner and the power of vulnerability.
Suzy Sanders, founder of Alchemy Virtual Assistance UK, shares her journey from employee to entrepreneur, the challenges faced by leaders, and the importance of appropriate vulnerability and playful curiosity. The conversation explores the transition from employee to entrepreneur, the challenges faced by leaders, the significance of appropriate vulnerability and playful curiosity, and reframing leadership and personal growth.
Making the brave decision after the birth of her son to leave her corporate job at a global recruitment firm, Suzy embarked on a journey to entrepreneurship. Her business – Alchemy Virtual Assistance (VA) – began from a (then) makeshift home office in Northamptonshire in 2016 with the purpose of providing remote administration, practical marketing and flexible PA support to independent business owners and entrepreneurs.
With her own strong core values; integrity, honesty, family, kindness and adventure at the heart of all business activities, Suzy’s collaborative approach has been built around building connections with the right people to make the most impact.
Quickly realising the power and strength in collaboration and community, Suzy set about fostering meaningful relationships – actively seeking to work with likeminded businesses who shared a similar ethos, exploring local, regional and global speaking opportunities at relevant events, chairing a well-known networking group, and supporting upcoming businesses and charities in her spare time.
She had recognised that success was not always about making money. Instead, it was these nurturing and compassionate business activities that truly boosted Alchemy VA's reputation – Suzy has won awards for her noticeably different approach and has been featured on radio, TV and in leading industry publications. The company’s loyal client-base and team rapidly grew and thrived as a result.
Continuing to receive a steady and increasing influx of enquiries from curious and aspiring virtual assistants who had been inspired by Suzy’s journey, she saw an opportunity to launch a franchise model where carefully selected individuals – only those with the same commitment, skills, mindset, personal objectives and values – could be trained, empowered and supported to build their own VA enterprises under the trusted Alchemy brand.
Suzy has since self-published a book, ‘The Alchemy of Virtual Assistance: creating a successful virtual assistant business around your family’ and continues to explore and advocate the importance and value in developing meaningful relationships in business.
Suzy holds the belief that this focus will enable her to amplify her business success, create more meaningful impact and value to her team and achieve her ultimate ambitious vision – for Alchemy to become the VA company of choice in the UK.

27: Speaking The Same Language - Why Cultural Awareness Matters
In this episode we explore one of the most overlooked leadership challenges in today’s workplaces - cultural understanding
In this episode of Manage What Matters, Marina Ibrahim explores one of the most overlooked leadership challenges in today’s workplaces: not a lack of motivation, but a lack of understanding.
Drawing on her experience working with multicultural teams, Marina shares how accents, assumptions, and cultural differences shape the way we interpret behaviour – and how misinterpretation can quietly impact trust, performance, and belonging.
Together, we explore:
• Why leaders often misread behaviour in diverse teams
• Where leaders unintentionally make communication harder
• What helps people feel they truly matter at work
• A simple shift leaders can make this week to improve understanding
• The advice Marina challenges – and what to do instead
Marina also reflects on how her own thinking has evolved, and why leaders don’t need to “sound the same” to be effective – but do need to be understood.
This is a practical and human conversation for leaders who want to improve performance without losing their people – or themselves.

Conversations I've joined as a guest, talking culture, leadership, and belonging with hosts around the world.
Jackie Handy - Inclusion - Rikki Arundel
I share my journey from recruitment to inclusion expert, the lessons from The Little Book of Belonging and simple steps to change.
I learned about diversity and inclusion the hard way — through my own negative personal experiences. And that journey, from a background in recruitment to becoming a D&I expert and Fellow of the Professional Speakers Association, is what this conversation with Rikki Arundel is all about.
I share how those experiences changed me, and how they have helped me change attitudes and practices in the corporate world — including speaking across the global speaking federation in 2020 and travelling as far as Namibia to share this work.
We also dig into my book, The Little Book of Belonging — a practical, accessible guide to building inclusive habits — and explore the simple, positive steps anyone can take to begin showing up more inclusively, wherever they are.
Takeaways
- How personal experience of exclusion shapes the most powerful inclusion work
- The journey from recruitment to diversity and inclusion expert
- How to change attitudes and practices in corporate organisations
- Key lessons from The Little Book of Belonging
- Simple positive steps to becoming more inclusive, starting today

Unconscious Competence with Jackie Handy - Amy Rowlinson
I share my personal journey from excluded and isolated leader to inclusion expert and how small steps are all it takes for change.
From struggling, excluded leader to inclusion specialist - this episode is a personal one.
In this conversation with Amy Rowlinson, I share both sides of the coin: what it felt like to be isolated and unrecognised as a leader, and how that experience became the foundation for everything I do today. Having lived through exclusion, I made it my mission to equip other leaders with the answers to the questions I wished I had known.
I explore the concept of unconscious competence - the ultimate goal for any inclusive leader — and how culture change happens not through grand gestures, but through small, consistent steps. In a world that challenges us in our own unique ways, I believe love always prevails. Small steps. That is all it takes.
Takeaways
- How personal experience of exclusion shapes inclusive leadership
- Why unconscious competence is the goal for every people leader
- How to inspire culture change and empower teams
- The power of equipping leaders with the answers they wish they had
- Small steps, consistently taken, create lasting change

Jackie Handy Connected Conversations with. Kirsten
I share my recipe for inclusion and leadership success, the role of human behaviour and why making inclusion a habit matters most.
Two decades as a top-performing manager gives you a lot of material to work with.
In this episode with Kirsten Roberts, I share the recipe I have developed through my own leadership experience and personal journey — the one I now give back to others to help them accelerate their performance and build truly inclusive cultures. I explore how a deeper understanding of human behaviour, and why we do what we do, is at the heart of great leadership and genuine inclusion.
I also share what inclusion really looks like as a consistent, simple practice — not a policy or a one-off initiative, but a weekly habit that anyone can build. It is what inspired me to write The Little Book of Belonging, and it is what I bring into every training room and every stage I speak from.
Takeaways
- The recipe for leadership and inclusion success
- How human behaviour shapes the way we lead and include others
- Why we accept or challenge the behaviour of those around us
- How to make inclusion a simple, consistent weekly habit
- The thinking behind The Little Book of Belonging

Jackie Handy - The Art of Living Proactively - Tony Winyard
I share my recruitment background, key lessons from that world and why playing the long game always leads to dividends in the end.
From recruiter to TEDx speaker — my journey has taught me a lot about value, patience and playing the long game.
In this episode with Tony Winyard, I share the lessons I learned from a background in recruitment — a sector not traditionally known for adding real value — and how I chose to do things differently. I talk about how I delivered a better service to both candidates and employers, the importance of training people and companies, and why holding back everything you can offer often leads to far greater results down the line.
I also share what it meant to step onto a TEDx stage and how the principles I developed in recruitment — over-delivering, building genuine relationships and thinking long-term — translated into everything I do today.
Takeaways
- Lessons from a career in recruitment and how to offer genuine value
- How to deliver a better service to both candidates and employers
- Why playing the long game leads to greater dividends in the long run
- How to win a prospect's trust without showing all your cards at once
