29: The Alchemy Of Playful Curiosity In Leadership
Suzy shares her transition from employee to business owner and the power of vulnerability.
Suzy Sanders, founder of Alchemy Virtual Assistance UK, shares her journey from employee to entrepreneur, the challenges faced by leaders, and the importance of appropriate vulnerability and playful curiosity. The conversation explores the transition from employee to entrepreneur, the challenges faced by leaders, the significance of appropriate vulnerability and playful curiosity, and reframing leadership and personal growth.
Making the brave decision after the birth of her son to leave her corporate job at a global recruitment firm, Suzy embarked on a journey to entrepreneurship. Her business – Alchemy Virtual Assistance (VA) – began from a (then) makeshift home office in Northamptonshire in 2016 with the purpose of providing remote administration, practical marketing and flexible PA support to independent business owners and entrepreneurs.
With her own strong core values; integrity, honesty, family, kindness and adventure at the heart of all business activities, Suzy’s collaborative approach has been built around building connections with the right people to make the most impact.
Quickly realising the power and strength in collaboration and community, Suzy set about fostering meaningful relationships – actively seeking to work with likeminded businesses who shared a similar ethos, exploring local, regional and global speaking opportunities at relevant events, chairing a well-known networking group, and supporting upcoming businesses and charities in her spare time.
She had recognised that success was not always about making money. Instead, it was these nurturing and compassionate business activities that truly boosted Alchemy VA's reputation – Suzy has won awards for her noticeably different approach and has been featured on radio, TV and in leading industry publications. The company’s loyal client-base and team rapidly grew and thrived as a result.
Continuing to receive a steady and increasing influx of enquiries from curious and aspiring virtual assistants who had been inspired by Suzy’s journey, she saw an opportunity to launch a franchise model where carefully selected individuals – only those with the same commitment, skills, mindset, personal objectives and values – could be trained, empowered and supported to build their own VA enterprises under the trusted Alchemy brand.
Suzy has since self-published a book, ‘The Alchemy of Virtual Assistance: creating a successful virtual assistant business around your family’ and continues to explore and advocate the importance and value in developing meaningful relationships in business.
Suzy holds the belief that this focus will enable her to amplify her business success, create more meaningful impact and value to her team and achieve her ultimate ambitious vision – for Alchemy to become the VA company of choice in the UK.

27: Speaking The Same Language - Why Cultural Awareness Matters
In this episode we explore one of the most overlooked leadership challenges in today’s workplaces - cultural understanding
In this episode of Manage What Matters, Marina Ibrahim explores one of the most overlooked leadership challenges in today’s workplaces: not a lack of motivation, but a lack of understanding.
Drawing on her experience working with multicultural teams, Marina shares how accents, assumptions, and cultural differences shape the way we interpret behaviour – and how misinterpretation can quietly impact trust, performance, and belonging.
Together, we explore:
• Why leaders often misread behaviour in diverse teams
• Where leaders unintentionally make communication harder
• What helps people feel they truly matter at work
• A simple shift leaders can make this week to improve understanding
• The advice Marina challenges – and what to do instead
Marina also reflects on how her own thinking has evolved, and why leaders don’t need to “sound the same” to be effective – but do need to be understood.
This is a practical and human conversation for leaders who want to improve performance without losing their people – or themselves.

The Leadership Skill Most Managers Are Missing — Vic O'Farrell
I share why mattering is an overlooked driver of engagement and how small moments and emotional intelligence transform leadership.
The most overlooked driver of engagement, performance and wellbeing at work is not pay, perks or flexibility. It is the human need to matter.
In this episode with Vicky O'Farrell on It Starts With You, I explore why feeling valued often matters more than salary, how belonging and purpose shape workplace culture and why emotional intelligence remains one of the most important — and most underdeveloped — leadership skills today.
We dig into how leaders can recognise when someone on their team is struggling, why psychological safety is the foundation of real trust and how the small, intentional actions I call million-dollar moments can transform relationships and team performance in ways that no policy ever could.

Jackie Handy on The Matter Model, Belonging, Leadership & Confidence - The School Run with Jane & Liv
I share my personal journey, the Matter Model and why helping people feel safe, valued and understood drives everything that I do.
What if school had taught us that everyone wants to feel like they matter?
In this episode of The School Run Podcast with Jane, I share a deeply personal conversation about belonging, identity, confidence, leadership and purpose. I talk about my journey — from wanting to be a German teacher to freight forwarding, recruitment, learning and development and eventually founding Runway Global — and why that winding path made perfect sense in the end.
I share personal moments that shaped my passion for creating happier, healthier and more human cultures, including coming out as gay as a teenager and the unwavering love and support my parents gave me. Those experiences are at the heart of everything I do.
We explore the two questions I believe everyone is really asking at work: Do I matter here? And does what I do here matter? These are the questions behind The Matter Model — and why small, intentional actions can create million-dollar moments that transform relationships and cultures.
This is a conversation about self-trust, vulnerability, purpose and the power of feeling truly seen.

The Missing Piece of Inclusion: Why Belonging Starts with Connection
I explore why inclusion misses the mark, the role of storytelling in building connection and how leaders create genuine belonging
Is the secret to workplace inclusion less about policies and technology, and more about genuine human connection? I think so.
In this episode with Felix Mitchell, I explore why so many inclusion efforts miss the mark - and what leaders can do differently. We dig into the role of storytelling as a tool for building real connection, and why belonging is not something you can create with a strategy document alone. It starts with people truly seeing and hearing each other.
I share practical ways leaders can shift from performative inclusion to the kind that actually changes how people feel at work — where they feel they truly belong, not just that they are tolerated.
Takeaways
- Why inclusion efforts so often miss the mark
- The role of storytelling in building genuine human connection
- How leaders can create environments where people truly feel they belong
- Why belonging is the missing piece of most inclusion strategies
- The difference between performative inclusion and the real thing

The Story Behind the Story - Katie Allen Consulting Limited
I share the story behind the story, why inclusion must go far beyond corporate gestures and how empathy builds genuine connection.
Real inclusion is not about tick-box initiatives or post-crisis pledges. It is about what happens in the moments nobody is watching.
In this episode with Katie Allen, I get into the nitty gritty of what genuine inclusivity really looks like — beyond the token gestures so often seen in corporate settings. I share my own journey, including what walking the Camino de Santiago taught me about the story behind the story, and why understanding what lies beneath the surface is essential for any leader serious about inclusion.
We also explore the authenticity of post-George Floyd inclusion efforts, the frustrating corporate resistance to uncomfortable conversations around bias, and why vulnerable, reciprocal connection is at the heart of real belonging. I share a deeply personal story about meeting someone on my travels that beautifully illustrates the impact of withholding judgement and embracing empathy.
Takeaways
- Why genuine inclusivity goes far beyond token corporate gestures
- The importance of understanding the story behind the story
- How vulnerable and reciprocal connections build authentic relationships
- Why bias conversations make organisations uncomfortable - and why they need to happen anyway
- The transformative power of withholding judgement and leading with empathy
